Avancemos Level I - 2.1 Telling Time
Objective: learn how to tell time in Spanish
Essential Question-Spanish focus: how might teenagers in Spanish-speaking countries tell time to one another?
Essential Question-Art focus: What is the relationship between art and technology?
Assessment of Learning: Students will be able to read time from a standard clock and say the time accurately in Spanish. They will create analog clocks innovatively with small paper plates and show correct times using minute and hour hands in response to my calling times in Spanish.
Arts/Technology Integration Strategy: listen to/view, translate, understand, and sing along to songs and videos that use the target vocabulary.

Hook/Introduction: What words do you notice as a theme in the vocabulary as a theme? What are we learning about this week? Who knows how to
tell time? Who can tell time on an "analog" clock as opposed to a "digital" clock? What is "military" time?
Lesson/Direct Instruction: Mini-lecture on telling time in Spanish. Read p. 117 as well as p. 94-96 while listening to audio CD.
Guided Practice: Complete p. 97 Activity #1

Guided Practice: Demonstrate how to set the hands of the clock to a certain time, make sure all students understand
Independent Practice: After 20 minutes work time, practice call and response with clocks

Objective: Create art in the style of Salvador Dali. Talk about Spanish painter, Salvador Dali. Describe "surrealism" as a style of art.

Hook/Introduction: Does anyone know who Salvador Dali is? What country was he from. How would you describe his style of painting?

Independent Practice: Students will duplicate the work, "The Persistence of Memory" by Dali and label the times on the faces of the clocks
