Objective: Students will use commas correctly and will be able to evaluate their own writing for Conventions and Analysis.
Do Now: Comma Practice and correction. (15 minutes)

Direct Instruction: Review Memoir rubric. Teacher will evaluate several paragraphs from student memoirs using the rubric as a guide. (10 minutes)
Guided Practice: Teacher and students will evaluate examples from student memoirs. (5 minutes)
Independent Practice: Working with a team, students will read several paragraphs from student essays and evaluate them. (10 minutes)
Assessment: Share out whatever questions and comments students might have about the grading of this piece. (10 minutes)
Enrichment/Homework: Students will finish their memoir pieces (2-3 pages) and evaluate themselves using the printed rubric which will be distributed by the teacher at the end of class. Additionally, students will write a 1-paragraph reflection on their writing process at the bottom of this handout.

Understanding how to arrange sentences within a paragraph is a crucial element to doing well on the assessment; moreover, it is essential to being a good writer! Lecture on structure of a paragraph: topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding/transition sentence.
